Yes I have to admit I am baffled. Take all the noise away and at its core it is a Caterham classic with a zetec and not many options other than pretty seats and an LSD. Its only claim to a high price is that someone once put $130k (or was it $150k) labor into it to add lots of little bespoke touches that quite frankly do not increase resale value much but maybe do increase emotional desire. Take that headline labor cost fact away and it would be unlikely to get much over $30k - maybe $35k - in the regular classifieds on Ebay or Craigslist. Once you are in the $40s price region then you are getting up to some serious alternative offerings of higher spec/more recent Caterhams.
I was at the factory on Monday and a few of the guys there were following the auction and were similarly astounded that someone spent that much on a build.
Ultimately the seller and the market will meet - seller can afford to hold out until the market lifts back up to their level. Likely in 2019 when GBP starts its recovery from its Brexit malaise (or maybe not if there is a disorganized exit)and the new Caterham market prices lift again restored the used car 'market.'
Oh and while I think of it Vovchandr, call Roger Krause for your 13 inch tire problem. They sourced the Avon ZZS on my maroon caterham I sold earlier this year and they also had the Avon ZVS as an alternative 13" road tire option for the Caterham. They deliver to you from the west coast.
Now 14 inch wheel/tire combos are more challenging!

I agree. The car would have done much better with both seats in and probably one single color. I was surprised to see reserve over $30k as it didn't seem like the owner was hard out for money and he just wanted to let go of the car to make room in the collection. Thats far too much money to put into it and not drive it, and yet keep it. I paid considerably less for my Zetec and it came with extra goodies and its an SLR.
To each his own though. I also wouldn't own 150 cars.
My 13in problem got resolved with some 888r's that I managed to source. Still debating on ordering another set and holding on to it so I don't run into another sourcing problem 5 years down the road. Not the ideal tire but it does in a pinch. I still have way less than 1000 miles under my belt with the car I got earlier this year. It came with original tires to begin with from 2001, wasn't going to push those very hard.

I don't remember seeing this on Croc's list.

OR something a bit different:

Old school restorations or recreations?? Maybe there's a couple pieces of original 7 frame in these 2 cars but doesn't appear to be much else. Not sure who designed the IRS. Interesting but certainly not original. Have never seen a 7 with track rods like this in the rear. Looks like the combination of the rear end from a Lotus formula car 18/21/22??? with rubber donuts with a significantly modified old 7 frame. Interesting but don't call it a Lotus if it's not.
Love the Mallock and looks like a good buy for a fun vintage racer.
Jim A.
First two links are the same and are a Craigslist ad link for many many weeks. Not sure there is much left of the original chassis as Jim points out but it does have some pedigree if you refer the linked article

The Mallock is one I had not seen. Steve M on this forum has a beautiful shiny one - goes really well too.

Croc,
Pretty sure I would have remembered this, if on the list before. It came up on the same Hemmings page as the 360R.
https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds...7/2153527.html
Hi PanAmericano - While that Caterham CSR "restyle" has been discussed on this forum once when I first saw it, I do not list it now as 1) its in Switzerland and 2) it cannot be imported unless Federalized - that means crash testing, air bags, etc. That said I give them credit for trying to modernise the classic seven for something a little different.
I do regularly exclude a variety of ads from this list for:
1) overseas and not able to be imported
2) really sketchy sellers (the so-so ones I let come through with a note e.g. this week - googling them is always a good idea)
3) car dealers who decided to get ugly with me once
4) those that I genuinely miss because they are on a different website to where I systematically look
I think I get 95% of what is genuinely for sale out there and list 90% - its not perfect but it is a good starting point.
cheers
mike

Mike,
The list is excellent. I just keep trying to find one you missed. Probably any I see would fall into your screened-out group. The greenhouse on the Swiss car reminded me of something from late 1930s Europe. The front not so much. Lots of advantages to a coupe though.
Keep up the good work.
