Iain.
I am lookin to sell a Caterham, tho a '97, not a '98. I dont know of any difference between the 2 years, tho. It's an X-flow 1700cc, 5 sp, Dedion, full weather gear, heater, etc. And I am in Cincy. If nothing else, I'd be happy to take you for a spin. Am leaving for a week's vacation Sat, and it needs a bit of upkeep (Just back from Mid-Ohio).

Can you tell us more about your Caterham, ie price, used for blats/track, etc.?
Thanks!
Hi Mike -
Do you have any pictures? I am downtown in Cincy but trapped at work! Any more details would be great.
Thanks!

Iain:
I just resurrected the old for-sale post for this car("Sold-1997 Dedion"). It was the first car ever sold on this Forum). When I get back from vacation (where I may not have internet access), I will post some more photos. The car has 29K miles and has been used mostly for blats and as a summer daily driver, tho track days have been an ever increasing focus. I just got back from Mid-Ohio where it was in the top 1/2 of the intermediate group. Its 106 mph top speed was a huge limitation on such a big track. The smaller/tighter the track, the better it does (I "owned"Waterford Hills, for instance:)).

Very interested Mike! Do you park downtown? (I think I've spotted you in the past and can't imagine that there's more that 1 seven in Cincy!) Lets plan to connect when you get back from vacation.
Give me a shout at jones_iain@hotmail.com

Iain:
Yes, the car is often in the ground level pkg lot at 9th/Main. Hard not to notice it:).
I am asking $24.5K (but will take $22.5K). I will send you a list of the extensive improvements/maintenance over the last 4 years when I get back. I can say it is in much better condition than when I bought it (except for road rash on paint).
Mike
Hold on to it for me Mike! :)
In there interests of helping out here are a few photos of Mike's car scattered around this forum:

This car was incredible to watch at the NJMP track day. Get Mike to throw in some driving lessons for free so you know how to eat Corvettes and Porsches for breakfast.

Hi.
I have a 1989 caterham 7 for sale. It has a cortina crossflow 1.6 liter ford engine. It is stock as received in the crate with a little over 2000 miles on it.
This chassis can be upgraded to the newer features of the present caterhams.
Call me at (408) 867-0159 for pics and further details.

Has Caterham changed the frame much over the years?

The "long-cockpit" car was introduced in '96 ( I think), foot wells enlarged in '94, all providing a bit of extra leg/foot room. Chassis was stiffened in '96 and suspension was revised. I have driven both short and long cockpit versions, and long cockpit is definitely roomier and nicer for drivers over 5'9'. Dedion susp became an option in '85, 5sp trans in '86. In '88 disc brakes on all 4 wheels became standard. Biggest change over last 15 years has been ever more powerful engines.

Actually, long cockpits were available back in 1985 when I bought my car! It makes a big difference!

So are all 96 and on S3 cars long and wide cockpit ?

No, the wide or SV Caterhams are a whole different beast. They didn't come into being until after 2000. Maybe even later. Series 3 or the normal width 7 is still produced even today and I believe the SV is an option. Except for on the CSR which is a wide body only.

My S3 measures 16" width for driver, ditto passenger. So, definitely not a wide body, tho does have the extra length. Didn't know long cockpit was an option so far back.

Sorryi meant to ask if they are long cock and wide footwell
Sounds kinky

FYI an SV is 4 inches wider and 4 inches longer than a standard Caterham Seven.

Re Sv
That is a big increase
I do not think they loose
much on the looks
But with regard to the reg S3...are they all they all mow what would be classed as longer cockpit and larger footwell from 96 or do on?

Out of curiosity, how does your you cat compare to the birkin with regards to driver/passenger space?

Wide footwell???? I think someone is pulling your leg. The foot well in my 2000 series 3, is pretty tight. I have to wear racing shoes in order to get all three pedals. Wearing regular shoes, there is no way you could do it.
We'll maybe if you had size 6 feet. The SV footwell is significantly larger and normal shoes will work. But don't let anyone tell you a standard S3 chassis has lots of room.

Wemtd:
They provide virtually the same interior width for passenger/driver (the Birkin is maybe 1/2" narrower).
Lengthwise, the Caterham is definitely better proportioned:the steering wheel is much further away. The Birkin feels exactly like the short cockpit Caterham from the waist up. Even w/my extremely thin carbon fiber racing seat in my Birkin all the way back, I can't extend my arms like I can on the Caterham, with the seat moved up on its slider abt 2".
The Birkin has lots of leg room but I am shoved too close to the steering wheel using standard fat seats. It is ok w/thin racing seat tho. For folks our size (5'9-ish) it works, but I dont know how well it wld work for a bigger driver

Have you ever seen a fabricated cut out and pod bulge done to allow an area for dead pedal

Nope, it wld put your foot space out side the car and therefore spoil the lines but I am sure it cld be done. I rest my left foot under the clutch on trips. Around town it hovers over the clutch ready to shift, wh/I do a lot.

Exactly what I do. I am 6'1" not fat and have no problem with the foot well or seating.
