K1200S or K1200RS motor

Hello,

I am just wondering if anyone has tried to build a BMW K1200S or K12RS motor based 7s. Both are already shaft driven and with transmission built-in and they generate 130+HP or more. And it seems like RS is better for RHD and S motor can be used for LHD.

A K12RS motor can be found on Ebay for less than $700.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Same engine as used in the now-defunct Formula BMW series. Should be able to find leftover engines for under 700 bucks.

When we ran the series, BMW made you take the engine out of the car after just fifty hours and replace it. They didn't even take them back (!) wasn't worth the labor to rebuild them, cheaper to get fresh ones off the factory assembly line.

Hi Ian,

Do you know if it's relatively easy to install the motor? Is there any concern of beefing up the drive shift other than just extending it?

Sorry dannykao, my experience with the motor is limited to running them in the FBMW race car. They were mated to a Hewland FTR transaxle, which was WAY more stout than required, so can't comment on a 7 installation durability.
Just wanted to say that there are very likely a bunch of really cheap engines around the country. Try posting on race forums.
