Carbon Fiber seat?

I am looking for some seats for my new Ultralite. When the British invaded during the Southwest sevens tour I noticed several of them had a molded carbon fiber seat. It had no padding was just molded carbon fiber. They all stated that they were very comfortable. I have searched the web but have come up dry. All I have been able to find is 5000.00 Sparco units. A little steep for a public servant. Surely someone in the community has these or knows where to get them. Loren

I've sat in the Tilletts and found that there was little lower back support, but I am 6' 3" tall, so that may have been a problem.

Thanks I knew someone would have a source. But like you said be ready to open your wallet. Holy cow thats alot of money for a seat. Anyone else of suggestions for comfortable affordable seats that will fit in the 7. The Ultralite will hold a 18" and 16" seat.

I put an Ultrashield seat in my Birkin. Specifically, the Spec Miata seat at 15" width as that was the widest that fit. They have many others too.

A wanker would say a bed of nails is comfortable. u'd be best served actually plantng ur keister in a bunch of seats to actualy see what fits and will be comfortable in a road rocket thank blndly followng what other people have bought.

Loren-I have the Caterham branded Tilletts...the kevlar/carpet versions which are a step below the full on carbon ones. The carpet is placed in strategic locations to prevent slipping on the molded seat. I wouldn't say they are that comfortable...especially for long hauls. They're not terrible, but keep in mind that I'm 5 foot 8 inches and about 165, so I'm not the biggest guy. At the risk of sounding vain (okay, I have some car-vanity), I like the way they look in my car...minimalist. Scott L. (who runs Orange's "sister" car pictured in the middle of the banner photo) has the carbons and I covet them greatly, even though the weave isn't exactly a match for the other carbon stuff I have...from discussions with Brian way back in the day, it seems the Kirkeys are narrow in the outside width dimension, while proving roomy enough in the space between the bolsters.-Al<edited><editID>Al Navarro</editID><editDate>2007-01-16 05:45:10</editDate></edited>

I have the MOG seats in my Westfield. We covered 4000 miles in 2 weeks on the USA tour with no complaints – even on the day when we drove 625 miles. Although the seats had proven themselves to be very comfortable around town, I was a bit concerned about comfort over long stretches, so for the trip I added seat bottom cushions made from memory foam, and the little kidney back pads from Sparco. The kidney pads are a must for me thanks to a bad back, but the seat cushions were probably unnecessary. They were soaked in a nasty rain storm the night we stayed in Moab, so we drove the next day without them in place and didn’t miss them at all.

FYI, the Ultralite seats are Ultrashields. Which are very similar to Kirkeys.



I do a little composite fabrication from time to time. Retail on carbon fabric is $50+ per linear yard and there is going to be a lot of fabric in a seat. So you arent going to find any "bargain price" carbon seat shells. Unless you build your own and even then they are going to be pricey.

Mike, The other day I asked about the plane which you are building in your garage. We never finished that conversation---along with a few others... Anyway, tell us about the plane: dimensions, performance capabilities, etc. Many of us like light stuff. A few pics would be good too!!
