Lotus Ltd’s 30th annual Lotus Owners Gathering (LOG 30) is being held October 8th through 11th 2010 in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. That’s Friday through Monday with a track day on Monday the 11th at Summit Point.

OK with the first post out of the way it is time to ask for a bit of help.
Many of you know from first hand experience that LOG is fun. Hopefully everyone on this forum knows that all Se7ens are welcome at LOG. What you may not know is that it takes a great deal of work and a never ending stream of ideas to keep LOG fresh.
I have taken on the role of contest chair (i.e., craft, long distance awards…). To fulfill my role successfully I need your help. I need your ideas. I need your constructive criticism of past LOG contests. Please send me a private email of any ideas you may have. If they are related to contests I promise that I will carefully consider your thoughts and opinions. If they are related to other aspects of LOG I will send them on to the appropriate person and maintain your anonymity if you so desired.

Dean, how about a build a 7 event. Get one of the manufacturers to donate a kit and have it built that weekend and Raffle it off. Money to be donated or fund the cost of the kit, if it's not a freebie.

I love that idea Tom!
Here's another: In the spirit of the UK Club's event at the Santa Pod dragstrip, what about a "US's fastest Seven" drag contest? I know it's not really what these cars are about, but that makes it all the more fun (in my opinion).
Two more:
- A contest for erecting a Se7ens top in the shortest amount of time...and half hoods don't count!
- Best Tamiya 1/12 scale Seven model (with a prize of a NIB Tamiya Seven...those things go for big dollars on eBay)
- I've always liked "Best Spirit of the Club (Lotus Ltd. or USA7s) as a potential category...you can't nominate yourself, of course.

I like these suggestions and have added them to my list of possibilities.
Keep the ideas coming.
I urge anyone to consider becoming a sponsor of LOG 30. Opportunities abound for sponsorship at all levels. If you have a special event in mind consider financial or in kind sponsorship, a bit of grease can easy the way.

Me, too.....preferably a little closer to the West Coast than the last one ;-)
I am beginning to wonder about Texas. Right in the middle, a bunch of Seveneers living there, nice tracks like MSR and the Hill Country for some leisure drives.
Anyway, just an idea.....Maybe together with a Southwest Sevens Festival?

And it was discussed that the next USA7s national should be seperate from LOG. We did the joint thing because of the location and Lotus collection, plus the economy. USa7s however would like to have a good showing at LOG. There right now is a big push to get as many 7s there as possible.

I think there is usually a portable dyno at these events - bring some scales, and let's do a head to head power to weight ratio contest.
Of all the ideas so far, I like the build-a-seven one the best.

I expect a strong showing of all manner of Se7ens at LOG 30
Lotus Ltd’s 30th annual
Lotus Owners Gathering (LOG 30)
October 8th through 11th 2010
Gettysburg Pennsylvania
Northern Virginian, Maryland, DC and parts of Pennsylvania are hotbeds of Se7en activity. Since LOG 30 will be closer to New England, another hotbed of Se7en activity, many people who skipped LOG in the past few years or have taken more comfortable highway cars will take their Se7ens to LOG 30.
I know of 8 Lotus Seven owners that have already made commitments to have their cars there, www.SimpleSevens.com is keeping a list. One Mark VI owner says he will bring his car and another Mark VI is a strong possibility. I also know of several owners of non-Lotus Seven style cars who have said that they will probably attend with their cars. For an event over a year away this is a very strong level of commitment.
One of the issues is that many people who traditionally attend LOG have several cars that they could bring. We have that "problem" ourselves. Taking 1 car to LOG is easy, more than one gets much more difficult. Se7en attendance will be somewhat weather dependent. If there is a strong possibility of rain I expect several people will leave their Se7en in the garage and take something more rain proof like their M100 or Esprit.
DeanG

The LOG committee have discussed having scales and a dyno but I never thought of turning them into a contest.
Loudest
Lowest
Lowest weight
Highest HP
Highest power to weight
I guess reversing some of these (e.g., lowest power to weight) might be fun.
At one LOG there was a prize for the newest owner (won by a guy who had taken delivery of a new car that day) and longest time owner.
Please keep your ideas coming.

The LOG 30 committee held another meeting over the weekend. Committee positions are being filled, although there is always room for more volunteers. Many husband and wife teams are stepping up to fill the various positions of this massive event.
If anyone wishes to help out with in any way please feel free to send me a private message.
I am particularly interested in talking with anyone who has knowledge of or experience in
- graphic arts
- staging art gallery exhibitions
- children's art
At this stage of the game the messy business of contracts is the pacing activity. Many of the event details depend on what comes out of the contract negotiations.
SimpleSevens http://www.simplesevens.org/ is keeping a list of the people who have committed to attending LOG 30 with original Lotus Sevens.
LOG is only 15 months away!

There is a great deal of stuff to see and do in PA. This site www.PAtrailsofhistory.com recommends some that may be of interest to history buffs.
I would like to visit some of the sites and museums dealing with the history of technology. LOG may require a two week vacation this year.

I was thinking that those not involved in planning/hosting LOG might rendezvous somewhere on 15 in Maryland or VA a day or two early...and drive up this "scenic byway". Laura knows that I'm committed for that weekend...and maybe the week. Why is Log 30 scheduled so late in the year (second week in October)? I attended Log 27 in Aspen, and it was in early September.
I would have seriously considered attending LOG 30, but I have to be on the road to Alaska at least by early September, in order to beat the snow.

I am sure the date was much discussed and we peanut gallery members (Alaskossie knows what I am referring to) shd probably pipe down, but... PA in mid-Oct can be cold/wet/snowy/miserable and it catches the end if hurricane season perfectly. Of course, it can be mild and sunny too, but the odds of weather misery go up in Oct.
DeanG
12-17-2009, 06:29 PM
One consideration is that it is off season. The rates are less - People have been complaining about the cost of attending recent LOGs. Room availability - finding a block of between 100 & 200 rooms is not trivial. It also slots in just after Fall Carlisle - Sept. 29 - Oct. 3 & the AACA 2010 Eastern Division National Fall Meet in Hershey 10/6/2010 - 10/9/2010
It has snowed at one LOG. It was LOG 13 in Grand Rapids Michigan.

The co-chair husband & wife team are working hard at making LOG fun and affordable for all. In addition to holding down regular jobs and trying to get all their cars in shape for LOG. The husband, Chris is a pretty fair mechanic and does most of his own work. I believe they have: 2X Europa, Eclat and a recently purchased turbo Esprit. I have trouble working on our Seven, a very simple car and our Elan. Mostly I have to turn our M100 over to professionals.

Yes, LOG 30 is full of surprises.
In addition to the traditional arts and craft contest this year there will be an craft categories for children. This is a wonderful opportunity to get your kids, grand kids, any kids involved in your hobby.
An additional category has been added for the longest distance traveled, longest distance tour in a Lotus on the way to LOG. This category is for us nut cases who will use LOG as an excuse to take an extended driving vacation. So take the indirect route to LOG.
A gallery of rare and intriguing Lotus memorabilia. The intent is to create a museum style setting for the display of: original drawings, autographs, ephemera, bits of famous race cars, rare model kits, vintage posters, photographs and etc. from Lotus history. This is an excellent opportunity to show off some of your Lotus treasures.
Interested? I will be monitoring LOG30Dean@cox.net or send me a private message.

Ok, guys, I just noticed that the Registration form and other details are now posted re: LOG 30 in Gettysburgh Pa.
For those of you who might be attending, what's the plan re: Dinners?
I'll assume Friday night's reception is free so for those coming in on Friday, that's a no brainer.
Saturday, the lunch at the concours was a good deal last year so, again, since it's on site, another no Brainer.
Saturday is the main dinner, and Sunday night is a barbeque buffet.
Question is will those attending do both dinners, Saturday only, Sunday only or neither.
I'm sure we could also go offsite for a dinner as a group if there was interest.
How many USA7er are planning on attending?
Are we going to do anything as a 7's group?
Any thoughts?

Time for an update
LOG 30 is coming together. This weekend I attended a planning meeting. A lot of work has been done and a lot still remains.
14 owners of Lotus Sevens have indicated their intention to attend with their cars (www.simplesevens.org is keeping track of this). The number of non-Lotus Se7ens remains unknown. If my memory is correct most LOGs have a ratio of about 1:3 (Lotus:non-Lotus Se7ens) so there should be a bunch of cars worth gawking. The hotel has 90 rooms reserved. Many people will be arriving early and leaving late.
On a personal note - I hope people have been working on models, crafts and photographs for the arts & crafts contests. I certainly don’t want anyone on this forum to win the why I didn’t bring my Lotus essay contest. If anyone has any memorabilia stashed away that they would like to share there will be a gallery event.

If anyone has any of these neat tools:
o DB meter
o Non-contact thermometer
o Tire thermometer
o remote thermometer
and will be attending LOG would you be so kind to use some of your time in scanning some cars? I think it would be nice to get some readings off the various cars.
I would like to know exactly how loud my Se7en is. I notice a hearing loss after a short drive without hearing protection (even when I drove with a helmet). I would like to know the sound pressure at the driver's and passenger’s ear level. The overall level of noise coming from the exhaust is also of interest.
How hot do the EXHAUST, brakes, differential, radiator, sump and engine air intake get after a hard run.
Does anyone actually heat up their Se7en’s tires on an autocross run?
I think we could advance the knowledge base of Se7ens and have some fun.

I have signed up, including the auto-x, wh/I have never done in my se7en, and the track day, which I have.
A recent trip to Delaware in my Prius showed that I-68 thru Maryland is a wonderfully scenic, hilly, and empty way east from Ohio, with little to no truck traffic and thus perfect for a se7en. Also many scenic and little-used roads from Cincy to I-68, so the trip to LOG 30 and back should be a big part of the fun.

The Se7en is probably the best auto-x car that is also street-able. I've only done 5 autocross runs in my Se7en but did well considering the engine and tires. It was great being able to see the tire placement in relationship to the cones. I will be running the auto-x this time around. Because this auto-x is being design by a Lotus guy for Lotus should make it especially fun.
The drivers education event is being headed up by a Esprit owner who is a professional driving instructor at Summit Point. He is a good guy so this should be an exceptional event.
Shamefully I haven't sent in my registration yet but I will do so today.
I know that there are a bunch of Lotus folks in the Cincinnati area. A group trip on back roads would be fantastic.

Looking at the agenda for Log 30, I noticed that there is a drivers meeting PRIOR to dinner on Sunday evening at the hotel in Gettysburg. The track is listed as about an Hour and a half from the hotel.
Question for those doing the track day and planning on staying near the track in Winchester Sunday night, are you planning on doing the buffet dinner after the drivers meeting or just getting on the road to Winchester?
Looking at the listing for the hotel, it looks like it's in walking distance of Cracker Barrel and Texas Steakhouse restaurants. I think I'm just going to hit the drivers meeting and get on the road and do Dinner near the hotel.
Anyone else care to share their plans?

What I want to know regarding the driver's meeting and trackday is the schedule of the trackday. when is (IF, this is LOG....) Tech, when are the run groups start.
I'm prepared to leave the hotel in a caravan to to the track the same way that 7-7-07 had the caravan to the autoX in Maryville if we're checking out ~7AM.
Otherwise, it makes sense to be closer to teh track to be on premises @ 7:45. I'll probably head home after the event. But it would make me more inclined to be around early friday for some USA7s stuff.

Jon, Last year, there was a tech sheet that you had to have your mechanic sign off on, I don't remember an actual tech inspection at the track. You turned the form in at registration. Again last year, at the Sunday evening drivers meeting, Run groups were assigned, winscreen stickers handed out and Helmets were checked for SA 2000 or newer compliance. At the track on that monday, there was a brief meeting and then the three run groups were staged.
I also recall them requiring arm restraints for you and your instructor.
I recommed finding a couple of good Summit point track day videos on YouTube and watch them until your eyes bleed, and you can visualize and memorize the track. Maybe Michael D has a few good ones posted up.
I still plan on spending the night closer to the track. Just have to decide on the Travellodge recommended on the LOG Site or the HI express that Michael pointed out. The Travellodge supposedly has good trailer parking which is a factor for me.

Putting aside my wind up of Jon :jester:...the CD/book was very good for understanding the Gettysburg site as you visit the various stops. Even without the sound you can use the book as a map guide of each stop on the battlefields. Gettysburg is a deeply moving place when you put it all in context with a guide like that.

I urge you to attend LOG 30. Thirty years of an annual car event is hints that it is something special. I love it and have missed only one LOG since 1991.

OK, I know a Se7en doesn't have much luggage room but...
Please bring your Lotus and or Se7en related memorabilia, pictures, models, art, crafts, children's art to LOG 30.
Help me out. I lobbied hard for turning the arts & crafts competition into a gallery event. There will be some interesting stuff (objects de art, factory drawings, models and more) for all to experience but we (the attendees of LOG) need your submissions to help make this an awesome, fantastic, spectacular event.
I just sent my form off - will be there for the reception Fri night and the Sat evening dinner. I also signed up for the autox - never done one of them before so it should be entertainment for the crowds watching. Unfortunately now that I have a new job on the horizon I will be unable hang around for the Sunday night or Monday track day since I will need to be back at the office - bit of a pity.
For those arriving early on Friday, any interest in getting a small USA7s scenic run (or "spirited drive") together?

A friend reports that yesterday when he made his hotel reservation 160 rooms have been reserved at the LOG hotel. I quick count of rooms based on their floor plan shows about 260 rooms.
The up side is that there should be plenty of people and plenty of interesting cars.

As it turns out, I think I'm only there for the Friday night event...have a family reunion to get back to for Sat.

I booked my room the other day for Fri-Mon. Not sure yet if I'll end up sticking around on Sunday or not although the Autocross and scenic drives are appealing.
Looking forward to it!

Al; Bummer. Consider heading back to LOG on Saturday night or Sunday morning.
xflow7; Take in a technical session or two, run the auto-x & tour the battlefield.
Everyone; Read, or listen to a book on tape, about the battle before LOG. I'm not a Civil War History buff by any stretch but it made my visit much more interesting and moving.
Anyone; My wife wants to take a horse back ride of the battlefield and doesn't want to be among total strangers. I want to stay away from horses unless they come smothered in onions. Anyone please, help me out here.

Is there any additional information available yet about the various events? For example: guest(s)/speaker(s) at the banquet, subjects of tech sessions, etc? I've trawled this thread and perused the LOG site and the Group page at the hotel, but haven't turned up many details.
Anyone know more?

Unfortunately not many details concerning LOG have been posted.
Besides the already announced Friday night reception, Saturday's formal banquet and Sunday's less formal banquet, people's choice car show, judged car show, auto-x, scenic drives, gimmick rally and the arts & crafts exhibit. I know of the following.
Satch Carlson longtime Lotus lover and comic car writer will be the Saturday evening speaker. Bob Dance, long time Team Lotus mechanic and Ken Szymanski Lotus F1 tire change (his is an amazing story http://www.nytimes.com/1987/06/15/sports/auto-racing-east-side-resident-helps-lotus-team.html) should be there.
The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum will have a presence although I don't know exactly what will be exhibiting.
Lotus Cars USA will be there.
The Lotus factory seems to be cooking up something. They have given hints but have not said anything firm as yet. I'm hoping that they will bring the Evora GT4 and the T127 but that is just my wishful thinking and not anything more that that.
I believe there will be technical sessions for the very early cars (e.g., MK6, XI...) Elans, and the Elise/Exige. I think I heard of a detailing session but I may be wrong. I was getting desert when this was covered.
There is likely to be some authors doing book signings. Actually it seems like the place will be crawling with various editors, authors and publishers.
There will be a car wash area and informal slot car racing.
A few specialty vendors will be there as well as having a low key swap meet.
A confirmation letter will be sent to all registrants.
A lot of people will be showing up on Thursday including 20 or so LOG volunteers.

The LOG30 T-shirt graphics have been finalized. Note the presence of a 7 series 4. We have ordered a few long sleeve versions to ward off the sun and sand when driving.

The car show and main banquet are Saturday.
Some of the minor events are still being moved about.
I need to mention that the car show is being held at Boyd's Bears http://www.boydsbearsonline.com/items/list.htm just across the street from the hotel. This makes it very easy to snag a gift for your significant other, children, grand children...
Because Boyd's Bears is large, with heating and air conditioning and has a few places to buy food (e.g., ice cream shop) I expect my wife will spend some quality time in there during the car show. Since it is so close to the hotel it will be easy to bail out or return to the hotel to steal another towel to assist in detailing. Actually the last time I was there the hotel provided detailing towels. This is in addition to the car wash area at the hotel that is being handled by the LOG committee.

Get your LOG Preregistration done and in the mail!
Two reasons to do it now:
"Preregistration must be postmarked by September 1, 2010" Normal registration is an additional $25.
Apparel "Orders received after Sept. 1 will be mailed after LOG, subject to S&H of $8 for 1st item, $5 each add’l item" So it will cost you more and you won't have that snazzy shirt or fleece to wear at LOG.

Dean,
I did not see a place on my registation for the t-shirt. I did order the polo and fleece. Will I be able to order the t-shirt on site.
Oh and it looks like Barber's will be bringing a 30. I think we should have brought the Mk IV because then I could get my 7 in the trailer also.

You can change your registration including ordering shirts... at the registration table. The hard working Cora (who I believe owned a 7, and a Type 14) will fix you, or anyone else up.
The first two lines of the Official LOG 30 Apparel are
T-Shirt long sleeve ($15 ea) XXL ($17 ea)
T-Shirt short sleeve ($14 ea) XXL ($15 ea)
It will be good to see you and the BVMM Type 30 again.

The latest counts for LOG30 have 200+ registrants for 360+ people in attendance. This matches nicely with the 200+ LOG related room reservations at the hotel.
LOG is a different experience. As you drive around you see other Lotus cars driving about and parked at the local restaurants and shops. Someone mentions that they heard about a good BBQ, ice cream, road, interesting auto shop and etc. suddenly a dozen Lotus leave in a group to check it out.
You hear yourself and others saying "I never saw one of those before."
If you have mechanical difficulties someone has the part you need, another has the tools you need and someone else has fixed the same thing and can tell you how to do the job and avoid potential pitfalls.
There will be an argument about a historical point concerning Lotus or racing and (except for the question of the origin of the Lotus name) someone who was there, built the part or raced the race will chime in.
You owe it to yourself to attend.

Today I received a letter confirming my LOG registration. It details the options I chose (e.g., events, food, merchandise) has a schedule of events and directions. Everyone who preregistered should have received a confirmation letter or should be receiving one shortly.

Dean: I got my confirmation letter too. The schedule of events, and the LOG website, list a bunch of tech sessions, early Saturday, but no details. Is there any way of knowing ahead of time what the various topics will be at the different sessions?
Also, I see there are still spots available for the trackday-Come on Se7en owners, here's the prefect chance to open up your car, and take its measure.

Just noticed that the weather report for Gettysburg for Friday 10/8-Monday 10/11 is zero (0) percent chance of rain, all 4 days. Lows in the mid 40's, high in the upper 60's, and sunny.
Of course , weather predictions are like stock market predictions, but it is an encouraging sign. Especially for those of us who wld prefer to leave the rain tires off and the top and doors at home.

Three Lotus Seven's in attendance already. Two trailered and Bill B. who drove from upstate NY.

This is a random gallery of cars I thought were pretty at the show today. If you see yourself, your car, or your loved one and don't want the picture in the gallery, let me know and I'll remove it.
Most of the shots were taken at the concourse.
Lots of original S2's and modern Caterhams.
Not that many variants. No Rotuses. One Birkiin. I didn't see a Stalker, Atom, Superlite, or a Westfield, but that could have been just me.
The wild lime green Exige was for sale for asking price $65,000. It had 581 miles on it and belonged to Jerry Seinfeld who traded it for a 1958 Porsche Jagdwagen.

By the way. I didn't register or meet and greet. I only had a couple of hours to look at cars and then go to a funeral of a good friend in Charlottesville, VA. later in the day. I had a choice of going to LOG30 or a funeral and decided to do both.

Lots of fun this morning at the autocross. Norm Beaver organinized a great course on a tiny lot with lots ofngravel. The event and it went off without a hitch. Fun was had by all. We even had spectators who applauded each driver as they passed by.
My thanks to all for an enjoyable evening at the banquet and the autocross.

The April edition of Hemmings Sports & Exotic has a 4 page article about LOG 30 in Gettysburg. Good pictures, as expected by professional photographer. It mentions Se7ens and has a couple of pictures.
